Commitment to Diversity
Being one of biggest schools in Kenosha you get a lot people from different cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives. As a journalist I want to ensure that every student feels valued, represented and seen as a student. For our 2024-25 theme "Who Knew?, We Did." we deiced to a take a bigger step in cover design. The Blaze decided to take 4 students each from a different grade level and put them on the front. Now I know you might be thinking well how did we choose these kids? Let's just say it was not an easy choice. The Blaze got opinion's from the staff and how they see these students as well as how we seem them. We wanted to choose students that are in a lot of clubs, sports, organizations, etc. For these four students we also had a checklist that they needed to meet. Another way we show our diversity is in our personality profiles. I love to see as many as people as we can in the book. As a staff every year we have a coverage tracker and our reference editor is who tells us how many people have been quoted, pictured, etc. In the "On Our Way" yearbook we covered a vocational class. The vocational class. were for students with special needs to learn what's necessary for running a business and how to sell products. The Blaze 2024-25 decided to focus on certain people through the book. We have spotlights throughout the whole book. We have really focused our key elements and having spotlights for variety of students has been one of them.
The Cover

For The Blaze 23-24 yearbook we had a issue with Gay, Straight, and Alliance club. One of the members asked my adviser that they shall not be named. We still wanted to represent the club but still respect their wishes. So we just put the officers.
